Breaking Through the Myths of Therapy
Myths can hold people back from getting support. Click each one to reveal the truth and discover a more hopeful perspective on counseling.
-
Truth: Counseling supports everyday challenges - stress, work burnout, relationship issues, life transitions, parenting struggles, grief, and personal growth. You don’t have to “hit rock bottom” to benefit.
-
Truth: It takes courage to examine your thoughts, patterns, and emotions. Seeking help is a proactive step, not a sign of weakness.
-
Truth: Counselors guide you in understanding yourself, building skills, and making informed decisions. It’s collaborative, not directive.
-
Truth: Avoidance often increases anxiety and emotional distress. Processing experiences in a safe space usually reduces their intensity over time.
-
Truth: The length of counseling depends on your goals. Some people attend short-term, solution-focused counseling. Others choose longer-term support.
-
Truth: Counseling is about growth, awareness, and skill-building. Many people seek therapy to become healthier versions of themselves—not because something is “wrong.”
-
Truth: Pain isn’t a competition. If something is affecting your daily life, relationships, or peace of mind, it’s valid.
-
Truth: Counselors are trained to offer compassionate, nonjudgmental support in a confidential space (with limited safety exceptions).
-
Truth: Friends are valuable support—but counselors are trained to recognize patterns, teach coping tools, and help you process in structured, goal-oriented ways.
-
Truth: Some approaches explore the past; others focus on present patterns, thoughts, behaviors, and solutions. Therapy is tailored to your goals.
